PURPOSE:To extract the contours of a pattern at a high speed and also to reduce the cost of a pattern contour extracting device, by using a means which stores the X coordinates of the start and end points of a traced contour piece. CONSTITUTION:A drawing (a) is optically read by an input part 1 with the raster scan and binarized by a binarization part 2. A line memory part 3 stores the binarization data equivalent to a single line and a single picture element respectively. In a contour extracting part 4, a pattern analyzing part 41 analyzes the picture element data d0-d4 inputted from the part 3 as well as the data given from a line control table memory 43 and traces the picture elements forming a pattern contour. An executing part 42 updates the contents of the memory 43, a coordinate table memory 44 and a coupling table memory 45 based on the analyzing result of the part 41. A table converting part 46 reads out the necessary data out of the memories 43-46 by the instructions of the part 42 and outputs the contour information (b) of the input pattern in a prescribed form based on said necessary data.
