PURPOSE:To detect the position of a paper sheet relatively correctly by estimating the time and the revolution quantity necessary for the arrival to a detector and carrying-out device from the time necessary for the detection of a paper sheet by a detector after the start of drive of a separator and the revolution quantity of a driving motor. CONSTITUTION:When a separating roller 1 is driven in the state where a paper sheet is inserted into a separating device consisting of the separating roller 1 and a frictional piece 2, the first sheet is separated and sent to an optical reflector type detector 5, and detection is performed. If the necessary time and the number X of revolution in a driving system are previously measured, the time necessary for the course from the position to the transport roller pairs 3 and 4 and the number of revolution (y) of the driving system can be estimated as y=(aX+b)l2/l1 from the distance l1, l2 from the detector 5 to the separating roller 1 and transport roller pairs 3 and 4 and the coefficients (a) and (b) empirically obtained. Then, the dimension of the whole device can be reduced, and the position of the paper sheet can be detected relatively correctly.
