To increase the yield of elements of the group of rare earths (REE), scandium and yttrium in their separation from extraneous elements as a preliminary stage in the preparation of pure REEs, Sc and Y in the chemical industry, two different exchange resins which complement one another in their separation characteristics, are introduced into a separation column. Besides increasing the yield, the simultaneous use of the two resins makes the process largely independent of the sample composition and it can therefore be used as a flexible standard process for separating REEs from many different matrices. In addition, it is possible to separate off all usual extraneous elements in a single process step, without different separation columns having to be used.
