The invention relates to a surface aerator for the fine-bubble aeration of waste water having a rectangular plan, the supporting part, i.e. the baseplate thereof, consisting of fibre-reinforced plastic. The essentially planar baseplate (2) is furnished with a surrounding outwardly directed tensioning flange (2.1), which is offset at a distance from, and in parallel to, the bottom plane, which flange makes possible the positive-fit suspension of the edge region (3.2 and 3.3) seamlessly joined to the perforated part (3.1). The stepped baseplate (2) forms, together with the cover (3) an air distribution space (2.4) to which is connected at least one respective air connection branch (2.2). Due to generally transversely offset slots, partially to the main tensioning direction, or accumulation of the perforation punctures in the clamping regions the tension of the perforated part is decreased and the extent of dishing reduced. This causes an equalisation of the air distribution. <IMAGE>
