A carrying handle for plastic carrier bags has an essentially U-shaped cross-section and a shape like a stirrup over its length. The base of the cross-sectionally U-shaped carrying handle with its upwardly facing surface serves as a resting surface for the handles of the plastic carrier bag. The upwardly facing surface of the base runs in a straight line between the two limbs or side walls and, in the longitudinal direction of the carrying handle, describes a path with a radius of curvature which does not equal 0. At its outer, downwardly facing surface, the base is provided with depressions and elevations running in the transverse direction of the carrying handle to form preferably four gripping depressions.
