Soiling matter on the surface of the ground frequently constitutes a risk of injury, for example on sports grounds when sharp stones come up to the surface of the ground out of the packed layer, or on sandy beaches when the water brings in soiling matter, for example in the form of crown corks, broken glass or the like. The new device is to bring about simple and effective cleaning of the uppermost ground layer. Arranged in a mobile supporting frame is a rotating brush which throws the uppermost ground layer onto a screening area, the screening area having a sawtooth-like surface and being constructed as an oscillating conveyor device, so that soiling matter which does not drop through the screening area onto the ground is conveyed into a collecting trough, which can be regularly emptied.
