The compounds have the formula I in which R<1> is methyl or CH2-OR<2>, R<2> is hydrogen, a protective group customary in carbohydrate chemistry or a mono-, di- or trisaccharide, A is a hydroxy amino acid, X is hydrogen, halogen, N3 or (subst.) amino, Y is hydrogen, a urethane protective group or an amino acid or a peptide, W is hydroxyl, a carboxyl protective group or an amino acid or a peptide, or Y and W together with A form a cyclic peptide. These compounds contain not more than 20 amino acids and are prepared and used as described.
