PURPOSE:To accurately segment an antangled character by repeating division until a continuous white line part from the upper end of lower end of a divided small area is detected. CONSTITUTION:The segmenting area of an inputted character image is set on the basis of character width and previously determined width and the segmented area is vertically divided into two areas T1-1, T1-2. Since a white line part continued from the upper end to the lower end is not detected in the area T1-1, the area T1-1 is divided into two areas T2-1, T2-2. Since a white line part continued from the upper end to the lower end can be detected in the area T2-1, furthermore division is not executed and the area T2-2 is divided. Thus, the division is continued until a white line part continued from the upper end to the lower end can be detected and an area connecting the white line parts is set up as a character segmenting part.
