<p>A wheel attachment, for giving increased support and traction, is an inflatable bag (9) of toroidal form. It is fitted co-axially to the wheel (1) and held there, when inflated, by a restraint (13, 29) bearing against the outer end and coupled to the wheel hub (3) by a tension member (11, 26) extending through, or forming part of, the central passage of the toroid. The tension member may be flexible or rigid, and it is attached to an anchorage (5) which may be permanently fitted to the wheel hub (3) using the existing studs. The inner end of the bag (9) may have an annular element (14) to locate against the wheel rim, but outside that there will be engagement between the bag and the side wall of the tyre (2). The bag may have a tread, or a treaded sleeve (30) may be supported by the bag being inflated within it.</p> |
