<p>There is disclosed an easily releasable fastener which is specifically designed for high torque applications. The fastener comprises a slotted nut (14) having at least two axial slots (32, 34 and 36), and preferably no more than one of the slots (32) extends completely through the body of the nut. The slots divide the nut into at least two segments (50, 52 and 54) which, in the preferred embodiment are retained together by the residual portions (37) of the incomplete slots. Each of the segments has a flat surface (30) for torque transmission and the assembly of segments is surrounded by a thin retainer band (48) seated in an annular groove (46) about the body of the fastener. The fastener is mounted within a retaining ring (16) which has internal flats (62) that coact with the flatted surfaces (30) of the individual segments. The retaining ring has external wrenching flats (64) to permit the application of the fastener to a standard bolt. The fastener is released by an extractor (70) which has a cylindrical shroud (72) to surround the retainer ring, with an annular lip (74) at one end and a lead screw (86) at its opposite end. The annular lip of the shroud is placed beneath the annular edge of the retaining sleeve and the lead screw is advanced against the upper surface of the segmented nut, thereby forcefully extracting the ring from the segmented nut and releasing the hoop tension about the nut, whereby the nut segments are spread outwardly, releasing the bolt tension.</p> |
