In a process for removing pollutants from the flue gases of furnaces, cooled flue gases and condensates can be reacted with neutralising substances, in which case they are previously conducted in the inflow over neutralising substances, such as magnesite- and dolomite-containing granular fixed bed filters. To improve this process, it is proposed that further heat is allowed to be given off from the flue gases in the inflow to the fixed bed filters and housing walls and that an additional process water circulation, with the aid of pump and spray elements, flushes and wets the surfaces of the granules of the fixed bed filter, so that, in addition to solids, the pollutants crossing into the neutralisation process at the wet surfaces also pass in part into the water circulation and are oxidised therein, in which case they pass through at least one further filter system within the circulation, in which pollutants and neutralisation products are removed from the circulation both by reactions and by flocculating out. <IMAGE>
