Spoilage of liq. organic materials in presence of water by obligate anaerobic sulphate-reducing bacteria is prevented by adding to the material at least one of dimetridazole (I), metronidazole (II), secnidazole or ipronidazole as antibacterial agent. The antibacterial is pref. added as a soln., suspension or emulsion contg. e.g. water, glycols, DMF and opt. one or more surfactants, esp. to provide 100- 500 ppm by vol. to the material being treated. Also new are metal- working concentrates contg. oils and/or glycols, emulsifiers and corrosion inhibitors, plus a nitroimidazole cpd., esp. (I) or (II), pref. at 0.05 wt./vol.%.
