The invention relates to a composition, which is free of surfactants and reducing agents, for the treatment of hair before rolling on permanent wave rollers ("permanent wave pretreatment composition") based on (a) 1 to 40% by weight of at least one monohydric or polyhydric alcohol with 2 to 6 carbon atoms, (b) 1 to 30% by weight of at least one ester which can be hydrolysed with alkali, (c) 1 to 30% by weight of at least one swelling and penetrating agent and (d) 5 to 50% by weight of at least one synthetic or natural cosmetic oil.
