Fibrous material for forming composites

A fibrous material for forming composite articles is formed by prepg. a polymer dispersion, increasing its viscosity and impregnating adjoining parallel reinforcing filaments with the compsn. A dispersion is prepd. of solid particles of a thermoplastic polymer in an aq. soln. of a polymeric binding agent. The viscosity of the dispersion is increased to at least 50000 cps to form an impregnating bath having plastic flow with shear thinning behaviour sufficient to uniformly suspend the thermoplastic polymer particles in the bath. The bath is worked to cause it to flow between the adjoining filaments, thus reducing the viscosity of the bath. The aq. content of the resulting fibrous material is controlled so that the thermoplastic polymer particles are uniformly dispersed between adjoining filaments.
