The process consists of stabilising the martensite induced by tension (SSIM), by subjecting the alloy to a single cycle with the following stages: (a) quenching the alloy to a temp. T higher than Ms at which formation of martensite is initiated; (b) immediately inducing the martensitic transformation (SIM) by tension using mechanical means at a temp. above Ms; and (c) totally effecting this transformation (SIM), keeping the alloy at temp. Ts higher than T, and under constant deformation by mechanical means until stabilised martensite is obtd. (SSIM).
