Device for regenerating soot burn-off filters

A multi-cylinder internal combustion engine has a common soot burn-off filter for all the cylinders. To regenerate the filter, the quantity of fuel required to oxidise the soot particles is injected into the cylinders of one group of cylinders while the cylinders of the other group of cylinders receive a correspondingly reduced amount. In addition, the amount of intake air to this group of cylinders not involved in the regeneration is restricted and it is thus always possible to establish an air excess optimum for oxidation.
