The invention relates to a method for monitoring the resistance to thermal-shock cracking of carbon-containing products during manufacture, these products being obtained by mixing a carbon-containing aggregate and a coking binder providing a carbon-containing paste which is shaped then baked to a temperature at least equal to 900 DEG C. This method comprises the following steps:

  - cylindrical samples are sampled from the said carbon-containing product, from which samples discs 1 are cut;
  - each disc is hollowed out in its central part 2;
  - a predetermined thermal energy is applied to each disc at its centre for a predetermined length of time;
  - the presence or absence of cracks in the discs subjected to the test are then observed.

<??>The energy source is an electric arc formed between the disc 1 and an electrode 7 arranged perpendicularly and axially with respect to the plane of the disc 1.
