Process for the biological treatment of a waste water to be treated containing a nitrogenous contamination, according to which: - an incidental flow of this water is brought into a mixing zone with at least one compartment (A, A', A") in which zone, using turbulent mechanical stirring, a relatively unconsumable and relatively insoluble granular material carrying biomass is placed in homogeneous suspension on this water and is maintained at a substantially constant mass concentration; - this water and this granular material in suspension are circulated through a separating zone (B, B', B") from which there are extracted, on the one hand, clarified water and, on the other hand, the granular material carrying biomass; and - virtually all of the active biomass attached to the said granular material is returned by forced recycling towards the mixing zone (A, A', A").

|
