An iminodiacetonitrile is prepared by the reaction of formaldehyde, hydrogen cyanide and ammonium salt in pH 1.5-5.5 at 30-65≦̸C. In the reaction process, a mole ratio of formaldehyde to hydrogen cyanide is 0.8:1.2 and ammonia to hydrogen cyanide is 0.4:0.6. An iminodiacetonitrile is useful as an intermediate for preparing alkali metal salts of aminodiacetic acid or iminodiacetic acid, herbicides, fungicides, chelating agents and surfuctants.
