The precision of a system for regulating the temperature of a resistance used for measurement purposes is reduced by deposits on the resistance (8). In order to ascertain the degree of dirt accumulation and to initiate a cleansing combustion process, the amount of air (m) or the amount of fuel (k) is determined, in a device linked to the internal combustion engine, and compared with a corresponding limit value (mMax or kMax). When the limit value is exceeded, a triggering signal is given to initiate a resistance (8) cleansing combustion process.
