In the case of a method for salvaging underwater bodies, a lifting balloon which is initially accommodated folded up in a salvaging tip arranged on the payload part of the underwater body is released and at the same time filled with a lifting gas. The gas generation is in this case carried out with the aid of a gas generator unit, which is likewise arranged in the salvaging tip and operates either on the basis of catalytic decomposition of liquid hydrazine or on the basis of the chemical reaction of solid lithium hydride with seawater.
