Pilot burner for a device for burning solid particles, especially soot particles, in the exhaust gas of internal combustion engines, with a hollow cylindrical mixture preparation chamber (10) and a hollow cylindrical glow-plug accommodating chamber (11) extending transversely to the first-mentioned chamber and connected to it via an opening (12). A fuel feedline (28) opens into the accommodation chamber (11) and an air feedline (18) opens into the preparation chamber (10). In the region of its glow coil (25), the glow plug (22) is surrounded coaxially, with a radial clearance, by a protective sleeve (26) consisting of wire cloth. The fuel feedline (28) ends in an outlet stub (27) which projects radially into the accommodation chamber (11) and ends directly in front of the protective sleeve (26). The protective sleeve (26) has a large surface area and, as a result, the fuel which strikes it vaporises uniformly. The protective sleeve (26) is welded to a sleeve (37) screwed into the accommodation chamber (11) and is thus easy to replace. <IMAGE>
