The invention relates to a process for treating paper and cardboard to improve the water vapour- and aroma-proof qualities, the paper or cardboard being coated with a coating agent which contains one or more polymer dispersions, which is characterised in that the coating agent contains a mixture (A, D) of a paraffin dispersion (I) and an aqueous dispersion of carboxylated styrene/butadiene (II). The invention also relates to paper or cardboard produced by this process and to the coating agent.
