The invention relates to a device for generating a rotary movement by means of a lifting body (9) which is immersed in a liquid column (2) and rises therein and on which the liquid generates a lifting force. The device consists of an elevator (3) which is immersed in the liquid column (2), and of an upper and a lower roller (roll) (4, 4') around which there is wound an endless belt (6) on which a plurality of support surfaces (7, 7', 7'') aligned at right angles to the belt (6) are arranged. Located on the floor (12) of the liquid column (2) is a sluice (lock) (13) having two sluice gates (14, 15) through which it is possible to introduce into the liquid from outside the liquid column (2) the lifting bodies (9, 9') which are capable of running up under the respectively lowermost supporting surface (7, 7', 7'') and which owing to the lifting force drive the belt (6) and rotate the rollers (4, 4'), with the result that a torque can be tapped at them. Located next to the liquid column (2) is a second elevator (19), which is connected to the atmosphere and with the aid of which the lifting bodies (9, 9') are transported downwards by means of gravity into the region of the sluice (13), in order upon passing the latter to be fed once again to the liquid column (2). <IMAGE>
