The support for the purification and separation of proteins consists of a porous solid on which a film of a polymer derived from polyvinylimidazole containing thiol functions and activated by a disulphide is deposited. According to the process of the invention the porous solid is impregnated with a solution of polyvinylimidazole, is rinsed, and a chain carrying a thiol functional group on the nitrogen atom in position 3 of the imidazole nucleus is introduced, and activation is carried out with a disulphide. Application to covalency chromatography.
