A welding appts. for depositing wear-surface material on a metallic substrate (21) comprises a welding torch (10) having a first passage (16) for receiving inert gas, a second passage (17) for receiving powdered metal, a third passage (19) for receiving shielding gas and a restricting orifice (20), a non-consumable electrode (11), a powdered metal delivery deivce (26), a pilot arc welding power source, and a main arc power source (13). A hard weld deposition on a narrow metallic substrate is carried out by depositing a powdered metal and pulsing an arc current to form overlapping weld bead.
