PURPOSE:To obtain the liquid crystal element having excellent orientability, good contrast and wide operating temp. range by packing a liquid crystal material contg. a specific compd. between two sheets of substrates provided with orientation control films consisting of polyimide on the surfaces facing the liquid crystal material. CONSTITUTION:Transparent electrodes 5a, 5b are respectively provided on the surfaces of two sheets of the substrates 1a, 1b, which surfaces face the liquid crystal material 4. The orientation control films 6a, 6b are then provided thereon. The orientation control films consist of the resin consisting of the polyimide and contain the high polymer contg. an imide bond as its essential component and are preferably subjected to an orientation treatment. While the compd. expressed by formula may be used along as the liquid crystal material 4 to be packed into a spacing 2 of the cell, this liquid crystal material is preferably the liquid crystal compsn. contg. at least one kind of the above-mentioned liquid crystal compd. The liquid crystal compsn. contg. the carboxylate compd. is low in the temp. at which a smectic phase is exhibited; in addition, the optical switching element produced by using this liquid crystal compsn. has excellent high-speed responsiveness. |
