Chiral or achiral ring compounds of formula (I) in which R<1> is an alkyl or perfluoroalkyl group with 1-12 C atoms, in which one or two non-adjacent CH2 or CF2 groups may be replaced by O atoms and/or -CO- groups and/or -CO-O- groups and/or -CH=CH- groups and/or -CH halogen- and/or -CHCN- groups and/or -O-CO-CH halogen, and/or -CO-O-CHCN- groups, or X-(CF2)n-(CH2)m-Q-; X is H or F; A<1> and A<2> are mutually independently unsubstituted 1,4 phenylene or such substituted by one or two F atoms, in which one or two CH groups may be substituted by N; Q is -O-, CO-O-, -O-CO- or a simple compound; m is 1 to 10; and n is 2 to 8; with the stipulation that m is 3 to 10 if Q is -CO-O- or O-CO-; may be used as components of chiral, tilted, smectic liquid-crystalline phases.
