In the knitter, the intermediate position for the needles is raised catch position. The sinker cams are located in relation to the patterning unit and are shaped that when the needles are extended into the raised catch position, the sinkers are in at least a partially extended setting. Pref. the lock cams can draw selected needles from the raised catch position, into the normal catch position or extend them into a knitting position. The lock cams hold the non-selected needles to be passed, or extend them into a catch position. The push rods are below the needle butts to extend and retract them. The lock cams give the patterning and needle selection, with extending surfaces to extend the needles into the raised catch position, and the needle butts can be diverted selectively to the extending curve or the thorugh passage track. ADVANTAGE - The appts. reduces the size of the system width, partic. with a low beating action and safe guide paths for the needles for knitting in two direction, in a rotary direction, and in one direction with a smooth knitting on all needles.
