A spool (12B) of a lock-up control valve (12) is arranged to have equal pressure differential areas (A1-A4) exposed to the apply and release (PT/R) pressures applied to the apply (8) and release (9) chambers of the lock-up clutch (6). The movement of the spool (12) is determined by changes in a single variable level pressure (PSOL. L/U) and independent of the apply pressure (PT/A).
