An elastomer-covered roller is produced which has a cylindrical core and an outer tube of cured elastomer, with a gap between them which is filled with a cpd. after sealing the ends with discs. Once the outer tube is fixed on, a central cap is applied to each end so as to close off the intermediate gap; each cap has partly cylindrical ends and a rim whose i.d. matches the o.d. of the covering tube and fits over it; the cap has a central collar at the outer ends to fit the journal of the inner roller core and hence centre it; one cap has at least one hole at one end aligned with the gap concerned to allow the filling cpd. to be poured into the gap. The cpd. is a polymer or rubber. ADVANTAGE - The process is simple. The prod. has a uniform thickness elastomer layer but the process needs no spacers to produce this.
