PURPOSE:To prevent lowering of engine speed at the time of resuming the slip control of a lockup clutch after terminating acceleration by controlling responsiveness of slip control according to an engine load change rate at that time. CONSTITUTION:The locking force of a lockup clutch is lowered by a control unit 60 at the time of acceleration to place a fluid coupling into converter state and enlarge torque to obtain large accelerating force. Upon terminating acceleration, the control characteristic of the fluid coupling at the time of shifting from the converter state to slip control is controlled in the optimum state according to the load change rate of an engine 10 detected by a throttle sensor 61, for instance the responsiveness of slip control, that is, the shift to slip control, is more delayed as the increase rate of engine load becomes larger. The lowering of engine speed caused by the sudden shift of the fluid coupling from the converter state into the slip state can be thereby avoided, and also the torque enlarging action of the fluid coupling can be obtained. |
