The catalytic treatment of nitrogen and hydrogen is effected in a pressure vessel with a heat exchanger in the upper of two catalyst beds. After passing the heat exchanger the gases are forced to pass an annulus outward and the upper bed radially inward to descend in a central pipe after mixture with a quenching or trimming gas. Another flow of quenching gas passes through the heat exchanger to the annulus.
