A forward looking sensor (16,S) on the vehicle detects the traffic situation ahead (17) and converts this into a signal (20) which is applied to a microcomputer (21). The computer memory contains stored traffic parameters (9) including road and weather conditions. From the sensor input and the comparative parameters (9) the computer generates a signal (22) to alter the position of the headlamp (11) beam (14). The headlamp is adjusted by an actuator (23). Typically, it acts on one of a pair of lenses on the lamp, and changes the beam position as well as its pattern. The actuator can also be used to deflect the complete lamp.
