The i.c. engine piston(s) (15,16) operate in bores (12,13) in a cylinder block (10). The pistons drive a crankshaft which is connected to an epicyclic gear train. The planetary pinions of the epicyclic gear are mounted on the end wall (4) of a housing (2), so that as the crankshaft rotates, the cylinder block also rotates in opposite sense inside the housing. The crankshaft is provided with passages (75) to supply oil to the bearings, and the cylinder block (10) has passages (80,81) for cooling oil. The outlets from the cooling oil passages are covered by the pistons over most of their stroke, but are uncovered when the pistons are at the TDC.
