The treatment is applied in successive regions in the direction of movement of the strip (1) through a chamber (10) ventilated (3) by an external motor (5). Heated air is directed on to both sides of the strip (1) from perforated guides (8,9) opened by throttle flaps (14,15). The air is drawn into a channel (11) from screens (e.g.12a) and directed towards the guides (8,9) by a by-pass valve (16) mounted below the strip (1). This valve is operated by a vertical rod (17) to divert the air away from the strip (1) if the movement of the latter is interrupted.
