The present invention is directed to a method of bacterial examination to determine whether or not a target bacterium is present in a sample (1) which comprises collecting a bacterial cell component from a suspension containing bacteria in a filter (4), amplifying a DNA contained in said bacterial cell component by polymerase chain reaction and detecting said amplified DNA, and an apparatus for performing the above method. The method of the present invention makes it possible to quickly, conveniently, safely and cheaply obtain the DNA-containing bacterial cell component from urine samples and even from fecal samples and offers convenience for the method of bacterial examination, thus permitting identification of the target pathogenic bacterium in a short time. <IMAGE>
