The hydraulic damper has the two pressure chambers (13,14) flanking the piston bridged by a by-pass duct (41) with a solenoid valve (43) which is normally closed but opened by the solenoid drive. The piston itself is fitted with two non-return valves (18,19) whose effect can be adjusted by an integral hydraulic control inside the piston. The damper is automatically set to the hardest reaction if the servo drives fail. The piston hydraulic adjuster is linked to the external pumped supply via the hollow piston rod (38). The pumped supply is controlled by a slider valve which can switch the fluid for levelling control. ADVANTAGE - Variable hardness; fail-safe setting if control fails.
