The invention relates to a splintering wedge 10 having a polygonal metal body, equipped with a striking head 12 of rectangular cross-section and a leading edge 14 with a cutting edge 16 arranged between two helical lateral faces 30, 32. The pitch of the helix is chosen so that the angle of inclination A of the cutting edge 16 with respect to the horizontal bisector of the head 12 has a value lying between 20 and 40 DEG . As a result, there is optimum splintering of the two pieces of wood by virtue of the rapid variation in the cross-section of the leading edge 14, and of the rotation of the wedge 10 during the driving-in movement.
