A composition of matter having the formula: [Mn16Ba8Na2ClO4(OH)4(CO3)4(H2O)22L8] xH2O wherein x is an integer ranging from 0 to about 32 and L is a ligand having the formula: <CHEM> The compound may be synthesised by preparing an aqueous solution containing sodium chloride, a source of carbonate ion, and a compound having the formula: Ba2[Mn4(O)(0H)(O2CR)2L2] wherein R is hydrogen or a hyrdrocarbyl group and L is a ligand having formula I defined above, and thereafter allowing the reaction mixture to stand for a time sufficient to form the said compound. <IMAGE>
