448,932. Filters; softening water. NORTON CO., New Bond Street, Worcester, Massachusetts, U.S.A. Dec. 17, 1934, No. 36114. Convention date, Dec. 30, 1933. [Class 46] A filter comprises a layer of granular material on a permeable rigid support composed of porous plates, which leaves a space below to which water is supplied under pressure for cleansing by reverse flow. The Figure shows a filter with a layer of sand 15 on a support formed of porous plates 32 of the material sold under the Registered Trade Mark " Alundum " or of other material comprising grains of quartz sand, crystalline alumina or silica carbide with a ceramic, silicate or other cement bond. The plates may be cut away at their corners to receive supporting rods 36 having flanges 38 and washers 42 held in position by nuts 40. The rods are screwed at their lower ends into anchoring cones 50 which are built into a concrete base 65 on the bottom of the filter tank. The water to be filtered is distributed over the bed by one or more troughs 18, which serve also for the discharge of wash water. Pipes 55 with baffles 75 over their upper ends serve for the discharge of filtrate and the supply of wash water. In a modified form of apparatus the pipes 55 are arranged to enter through the side walls of the tank. It is stated that a bed of zeolite in water-softening apparatus may be supported by porous plates in the manner described. |
