摘要 PURPOSE:To improve the transparency of the display element in a non-display state and to obtain the liquid crystal element which can be well observed by randomly providing plural very small rugged parts on one of a pair of substrates in such a manner that a liquid crystal can be erected from the substrate and is thus oriented. CONSTITUTION:The plural very small rugged parts 9 are formed in a recessed part region 2b trimmed by a spacer 8 consisting of approximately the same material as the material of a diffraction grating 2 on the surface of the substrate 4' which is one of a pair of the substrates. The liquid crystal is packed into the recessed parts 2a and the recessed part region 2b. The rugged parts 9 are formed by etching, for example, synthetic glass contg. impurities in SiO2. The rugged parts 9 have a difference in height from 500 to 5000Angstrom at this time, by which the orientation state of the liquid crystal is well maintained. These parts are so formed that the orientation in the spontaneous orientation state of the liquid crystal to be packed into the recessed part region 2b is made into a homeotropically oriented state, by which the generation of the boundary line between the display part and the non-display part is prevented at the time of the non-display.
