A process to press articles of textile material, to follow laundering, is carried out in stages, with pressure and heating applied, which dries and smoothes the articles. In at least one stage, the whole width of the article is steamed. The appts. is also claimed. A three bowl machine is usual, each with a suitable drive and a heated pressure plate below. Each of the intermediate transfer plates as well as the initial feed plate is formed to have a full width steam injector passage and a supply box. The passage may be vertical or horizontal in the intermediate plate. The passage may include a baffle, which is operated from the central controller, to allow the steam to pass only at specified times. Each steam supply point has an internal tube with fine distribution holes, connected through electrically controlled valves to the steam supply, through the conditioner. From the central controller a connection is taken to sensors which determine the dryness of the article being pressed, and at each stage. The amount, temperature, and moisture content of the steam, and the time of application, are all controlled by the same unit. ADVANTAGE - The article being pressed is not subject to excessive localised drying, and avoids final stiffness, so that the articles have a softer handle.
