PURPOSE:To increase activity in a reaction such as the alkylation or polymn. of hydrocarbon by drying iron hydroxide or oxide and adding a specified amt. of a soln. contg. sulfuric acid radicals to the resulting dry powder. CONSTITUTION:A soln. contg. sulfuric acid radicals is uniformly added to dry powder of iron hydroxide or oxide by <=30 pts.wt. per 100 pts.wt. of the powder to carry sulfuric acid radicals by 0.5-12wt.% as sulfur and a solid acid catalyst is produced. A soln. prepd. by dissolving sulfuric acid or amine sulfate in water or an org. solvent such as alcohol or carboxylic acid may be used as the soln. contg. sulfuric acid radicals but an aq. sulfuric acid soln. is preferably used. The water content of the dry powder is <=5wt.%, preferably <=1wt.%. The solid acid catalyst is effective in a reaction such as the alkylation, polymn. or dehydration of hydrocarbon, is more easily produced than the conventional solid acid catalyst and is a practical catalyst. |
