METHOD OF INITIALIZING RECORDING MEDIUM

PURPOSE:To enable initialization in a short time by using one high-output semiconductor laser and setting the laser in such a way that the longitudinal direction of the beam spot is inclined at an angle to a recording track. CONSTITUTION:A single high-output semiconductor laser is used, and the longitudinal direction of a beam spot 7 is inclined at an angle except an angle parallel with the direction of a recording track 8. A region to be initialized is moved, and the region is initialized while the spot 7 is shifted in the direction approximately vertical to the direction of the track 8. When the speed of movement of the region to be initialized is kept constant without depending upon a place, the longitudinal direction of the spot 7 is set so that the angle formed by crossing with the direction of the track 8 is approximately 90 deg., thus initializing the region in the shortest time.
