PURPOSE:To make jitter small, to make modulation factor at the time of reproducing large and to improve reprodcing characteristic by forming a pit part and a non pit part having length corresponding to the time width of a reference digital signal. CONSTITUTION:The time width at high level corresponding to the irradiation period of the reference digital signal A is decreased by one clock and the time width at low level corresponding to the irradiation stop term is increased by one clock by a time width conversion circuit 10. Meanwhile, the trailing edge of a signal D from a time width detection circuit 20 is aligned with the trailing edge of the signal C at high level and the signal D is delayed by dt1 by a delay circuit DL1. The signal C from the circuit 20 and the signal E from the circuit DL1 are ORed by an OR circuit 31 so as to output a recording signal F. The medium is irradiated with a laser beam according to the signal F so that the pit part and the non pit part corresponding to the time width of the reference digital signal are formed.
