The rotary optical encoder according to the invention includes, in a casing (2), an infrared light source, a fixed disc (3) solidly attached to the casing (2), a rotary disc (4) fixed by adhesive bonding on a rotary shaft (1) and photoelectric detectors capable of detecting the light from the light source passing through transparent regions provided in the discs (3) and (4). At least one of these discs is made of amorphous plastic and carries, only in the encoding zone, opaque regions obtained by metal deposition. By virtue of this arrangement, the disc can be adhesively bonded by means of a bonding substance which polymerises when exposed to ultraviolet light. <IMAGE>
