The invention proposes a device actuating an internal combustion engine valve (14), of the type including a cam (20) which acts on the free end (22) of the stem (24) of the valve (14) counter to the elastic return load which is applied to it by a valve spring (50), characterised in that it includes a gas spring (26) operating in compression which is interposed between the operating cam (20) and the end (22) of the stem (rod) (24) of the valve (14), and means (58) for controlling the amount of pressure prevailing inside the working chamber (36) of the gas spring (26) in order to vary the stiffness of the gas spring. <IMAGE>
