This head is of the type composed of a body formed of two cheeks (flanges) (2a) secured to a lifting ring (8), of a support means for the chain and for means capable of translationally wedging the chain (9) with respect to the cheeks (2a). According to the invention, the support means for the chain (9) is made up of a yoke (10) located between the cheeks (2a) of the body, mounted so that it can slide vertically with respect to these cheeks and returned upwards by means of springs (19) bearing on the body and developing a load greater than the weight of the chain (9) but less than the weight of the load, whereas the means for wedging the chain are made up of at least one axial finger (15a) secured to the body and retracting into a slot (14) which is radial and vertical, made in the yoke (10) and emerging from the upper part of the latter. <IMAGE>
