A core (7) consisting of a metallic mandrel (10) and a tubular sleeve (8) is placed in the ingot mould (1) during at least a part of the cooling of the metal of the ingot. The core is cooled by a circulating fluid. After having cast the metal into the ingot mould (1), a centring device (4) is placed on the ingot mould. The core (7) is engaged in the centring device (4) so that it rests on the bottom (2) of the ingot mould, in a perfectly centred position. <IMAGE>
